Turmacin® and it’s development

Along with its rich history of use, turmeric’s scientific portfolio is also rich in evidence in its use particularly for managing inflammation and supporting joint health. Joint health is one of the top concerns among adults globally, as the fear of losing mobility to aggressively worsening osteoarthritis is common.

Turmacin® is an innovative clinically researched ingredient that brings the joint and cartilage health benefits of turmeric to dietary supplements. Featuring water-soluble Turmerosaccharides, our patented, bioactive polysaccharide, Turmacin® is the clean label, natural way to add joint and cartilage support functionality to your formulation.

As there is a bevy of turmeric extracts that focus on the content of standardized curcuminoids, the opportunity to develop an effective and safe extract that focuses on the power of its unique polysaccharides has proven worthy.

Traditional uses Traditional uses

Traditional uses

Turmeric has a very long history of culinary, cosmetic, and medicinal use. Throughout Asia and India, there is substantial use of turmeric in traditional medical modalities to fight inflammation and pain.

In Ayurveda practices, turmeric is well-documented to have several useful actions for the treatment of rheumatism, sprains/swelling, and other conditions characterized by inflammation. Ayurvedic texts include dosage forms such as svarasa (juice), kalka (bolus/paste), kvatha (decoction), hima (cold infusion), phaṇṭa (hot infusion), and curna (powder).

In Indian culture, turmeric is held in high esteem beyond just for healing purposes. Hindus hold the herb sacred and it is part of a wedding tradition where the groom ties mangala sutra, a string dyed yellow from turmeric around the bride’s neck in a loving, symbolic gesture. And in South India, men and women who want to protect themselves from evil spirits will wear a turmeric rhizome piece as an amulet.

Water-soluble & oil-soluble components of turmeric Turmacin and it’s development

Water-soluble & oil-soluble components of turmeric

The vast majority of research on turmeric-based products has been conducted on:

  • Whole turmeric powder
  • Volatile oil portions of turmeric
  • Isolated curcuminoid extracts (especially curcumin)

Meanwhile, over 90% of the remaining water-soluble constituents of turmeric have been neglected and rarely investigated for their own health benefits. That begs the question: what have we been throwing away?

At Natural Remedies, we were on a quest to discover these unexplored components of turmeric. After years and years of research by our team of herbalists and scientists, we discovered that turmeric also contains a special class of water-soluble polysaccharides that are potent, promising, and bioactive. We named them Turmerosaccharides.

Turmacin® is backed by 5 clinical studies:

Clinical Study 1

Turmacin® effectively managed the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis and supported physical function of knee joints.

Clinical Study 2

Turmacin® (0.5g and 1g) was efficacious when compared to placebo in increasing the pain threshold and knee ROM in healthy participants.

Clinical Study 3

Compared to placebo, the Turmacin®/ curcuminoids combination significantly improves knee pain and function among people with inflammatory knee osteoarthritis.

Clinical Study 4

B-Turmactive and BY reduced self-reported, mild/moderate joint pain after 3 days and 1 week of treatment. The analgesic effect of B-Turmactive was progressive and accompanied by an objective decrease in inflammatory status.

Clinical Study 5

Turmacin® an extract of Curcuma longa containing Turmerosaccharides was found to be safe and tolerable at both the tested doses administered for the given duration of trial period in healthy adult volunteers.

Multiple Modes Of Action Multiple Modes Of Action

Turmacin® has multiple modes of action

  1. Turmacin® reduces collagen degradation markers(L-6, IL-8, COx-2, PGE, TNE- alfa, ICAM-) in chondrocytes.
  2. Turmacin® reduces cartilage damage by increasing the gene expression of type II collagen.
  3. Turmacin® reduces NF-KB (a protein complex that plays central role in inflammation).
  4. Turmacin® decreases ageing of cartilage cells (mediated by H,0, a free radical generator).

Turmacin® supports joint health by maintaining equilibrium between degradation and synthesis of cartilage matrix

  1. Reduces production of:
    • Inflammatory mediators
    • Reactive oxygen
    • Species Aging
  2. Increases synthesis of:
    • TProteoglycan synthesis
    • Anti-inflammatory cytokines
    • Collagen synthesis

Applications of Turmacin®

Functional food and beverages

Turmacin® has achieved self-affirmed GRAS status, so it is approved for use in functional foods and beverages. Unlike fat-soluble curcuminoid preparations, Turmacin® dissolves easily in water and stays in solution, avoiding the sediment problem.

Functional food and beverages

Healthy aging

Turmacin® has been clinically demonstrated effective for relieving symptoms of arthritis, making it an excellent choice for joint health products.

Healthy aging

Turmacin®+Curcuminoids = Full Spectrum Activity

Turmacin® can be used as a standalone ingredient or combined with curcuminoids to create a fullspectrum turmeric product delivering both fat and water-soluble components of the herb. This approach may be particularly appealing to consumers who are drawn to the concept of whole-herb standardized extracts.

Turmacin®+Curcuminoids = Full Spectrum Activity

Sports and fitness

Turmacin® is an excellent choice for endurance products because it increases the time to onset of pain during exercise, allowing fitness enthusiasts to push harder, longer. And since it effectively eases joint pain and increases joint mobility in physically active people.
